Default RE: Cam thrust washer?

When it thrust against the thrust washer it keeps the cam off the Cam bushing in the cover which is brass and wears very quickly .Shovel Heads and earlier had .001 to .005 clearance because the cam use to flop back and forth wearing against both surfaces.

In the EVO days the cam clearance wasn't important to keep tight to control the cam so as long as you had at least .005 it was okay because the cam was going to thrust toward the case as it ran.

As you can see from the picture the case has been damaged. This is a result of cam bearing not installed properly so there was no end play resulting in the thrust washer gouging the case. Do you think the case is ok to run? Its a Evo.
Thanks Quigley

Sure it is but your bearing still isn't in all the way...that little trough in the case is for oil to drip into the bearing and the bearing itself is blocking it. You should have a big thrust washer and a cam shim in the end of the cam...thrust washer against the case then the shim

Thanks for all your help. The bearing you see in the picture is the old one, got a new one to install. Just a liitle gun shy right now after that dumb *** mistake. This is what happens when you get in a hurry and dont&nbsp\\;make sure everything is right.
Thanks again Quigley

Default Hot to measure the bearing washer and flywheel washer.

Guys I’m very handy and know I can get this done on my 82 shovel. Just need a lot help.. This is my first bottom end build. What do I do to figure out if I need new cam washers? Do measure between the bearing washer and flywheel washer with the pinion shaft bolted to the flywheel?I’ve already figured out my rollers and race side to side play. Am I missing something? Thank you!

Default 900 Cam Thrust Plates

Did all early 900 Ironheads have cam thrust plates ? I picked up a 62 XLH With a seized piston, during disassembly found washers for end play .006 but no thrust plates..Also no milling in case that helps hold thrust plate in position,(with a little grease) like all other most later XLH 1000 motors I reconditioned..any info would be appreciated
