Default Cam thrust washer?

What is the purpose of a cam thrust washer? If there is a clearance of 005 to 050 between the washer and cam I dont understand the purpose for it. Can someone please educate me?
Thanks Quigley

There is no chain , its a gear driven cam.

The cam is designed to run up against the metal washer os it won't slap back and forth wearing out the cam bushing in the cam cover so hence the name Thrust Washer.

Thats what I'm confused about. How can it run up against it when you have a end clearance of 005 to 050 between the washer and cam? Please explain this to me.
Thanks Milan

The thrust direction was cut into the cam and pinion gear.

The clearance is a running clearance. Needed for expansion and proper lubrication. When an object spins...a cam, a crank, the rotor in an electric motor, etc the spinning force causes the rotating member to Thrust in one direction or the other, depending on direction of rotation. The thrust washer is to protect the rotating and non rotating surfaces from being damaged by this action.
How'd I do Doc? Did I get that right?

Close enough....the forum keeps deleting my post if I try to type out a decent explanation.&nbsp\\; The cam gear and pinion gear are cut a certin way to make the cam thrust back against the case not the cam cover.
