Pulled threads
While torqueing down the heads on my 80" Evo, I managed to pull the threads from the case. Damn new torque wrench! The other 7 bolts torqued just fine at 42 ft/lbs.
Should I use a Heli-Coil or a Time-sert to fix the durn threads? What size is the bolt that drops down through the cylinders? This is a 1984 Evo Softail. FXST.
Thanks,
Don

I have been using a insert that is smaller than a normal tyme sert but stronger than a heli coil. You drill the hole larger and this little item taps itself into the item you are working on. They are called seal lock thread repair inserts?? I get them from a local machine shop. I just started using them and they have worked great. Have not had a chance to try them on a evo case for studs. They install with the bolt that would fit that size hole you pulled the threads out of. Very slick little insert.
I found the Seal-Lock web page, but couldn't find any dealers from which to purchase. I called a couple machine shops at the nearest real town (1 1/2 hrs away) and one of them had an insert that sounded like the Seal-Lock but had two slots in the end instead of one. I'll check it out when I head over there saturday.
