engine backfire

my evo backfires once in a while when starting. it backfires through the exhaust. any soulutions? it does it hot or cold.

A buddy of mine has a 97 Evo that does the same thing. I'm guessing it has something to do with how it's jetted, but I'd be interested in a real answer as well...

my guess would be that if its still factory ignition then its firing on the exhaust stroke of the non-firing cylinder...
