Default Crank Run-Out Who has checked prior to cam swap?

Been following a thread from HDF member "Swaite" in regards to his crank run-out being outta spec & am curious how many people actually checked the run-out prior to doing a cam swap...

I did. If you thinking about gear drive, you must check it.

Can the runout be done properly without having to remove the cam chest, just the outside cover itself?

With my recent engine modifications, the engine builder (fortunately) checked the crank runout before ordering my gear drive cams. Mine was right at the limit which, if I recall correctly, is .030". Someone please correct me if that's wrong.

Anyway, my engine builder flatly refuses to install gear drive cams if the crank runout exceeds the limit.

What is used to check the run-out? I'm thinking before I put cams in I will wanna borrow or maybe rent the necessary tool to do this. Name & or possible model # of said tool?

.003" is the generally acceptable limit for gear drive cams.

A dial indicator securely mounted somewhere (most use a magnetic base) so that it won't move when the crank is rotated. Check with cam plate removed. Check every 90*; you are measuring total runout.

Google crank runout and look for a YouTube video. I believe Randy (King of Cubes) has one on his website. Harley Hog had a video on his website but I believe the MoCo finally forced him to take the site down.
