Default NEWB Questions

OK, so I got my 92 Softail a few weeks ago. Last night I was changing the pipes and noticed a good bit of carbon build up in the exhaust port and up around the valves. Motor has 30k on it. My questions are

#1. What can I use to run through the engine to clean some of the carbon out?

#2. I dont know what octane has been run in the motor, so will it hurt if I start running the high grade stuff or should I stick with the 87/89?

Why are you running 87/89 Octane in a 92 Octane motor?

Carbon typically isn't a problem. It looks worse than it is, I'd imagine.

I'm not an expert, but we use BG products at the car dealership I work at. I think you should always run a higher octane gas, 91 or higher.

What do the plugs look like? You might be running too rich. And stick to the higher octane gas.

Plugs are brand new, I just had the 30k service done on it and they replaced the plugs. I think it was running rich because they said it had way to big of a jet in it so they put the right one in it.

If you see what I posted I said I didnt know what was being run in it, I just got the bike. As for it being a 92 Octane motor, thats something I didnt know. So I will plan on running the expensive ****..

I was thinking the same thing. That much carbon in the areas your describing is indicative of too much fuel. Since most staging on bikes get too much fuel ,I would start by having the tuning checked.
