Iv been runniung Premium in my 07-Bob. I think I will try a few tanks of Regular and see if I notice any difference. If I dont notice any difference then I will continue to use Reg. and save my self $ .50 a gallon. From 91 octane to 87 cant make that kind of a difference except in your wallet.
I'm no expert but from what I've heard, it can and will make a difference. If there was no difference, why would they sell premium? HD recommends premium - actually a bit stronger than a recommendation - they require it according to the owner's manual. Yes it costs more but it's pennies compared to the cost of your bike, etc. Premium is like 20 cents more a gallon where I live - not sure where you are or why it would be 50 cents more but, still, you are talking about a couple of bucks max. I don't know the downside of using lower octane gas because I've never tried it but assume there is potential knocking and pinging and that is probably not good for the motor in the long run. My sister-in-law had a german car that required premium and it absolutely would not run right with regular or even the mid-grade gas. She finally traded it for a cheaper model that would run regular gas.
I'm sure you'll get a much more technical explanation but I wouldn't try it if I were you until you are convinced it's not a problem where you could end up paying what you saved and then some in the long run.
I remember reading about how it makes your bike run a bit leaner and you'll hear more decel pops. Can't confirm that though. And yeah I also put 92 in my bike.
Not a wise move in my opinion...it could present a warranty issues now, orcausemotor problems down the road after the warrant has run out ; all for the sake of saving $2.50 per fill up. Whats the old saying "penny wise and dollar foolish" !
i had to run regular 1 time station was out of prem and i was out of gas
Bike pingged loud under acceleration ran it out (only 1/2 of tank) run prem only
After dropping 16k on a new bike I don't worry about .20 cents per gallon more. HD doesn't get a kick back off gas so I know that they are recommending it for a reason. I will run nothing but the higher octane. JMO.
I have run 93 oct in all my HDs, knuck, pan, shovel and Evo. All had 8-1 compression but as explained to me, the slower burning 93 makes use of the long stroke traditional in HDs. A little longer burn runs cleaner and smoother, can't vouch for the cooler bit. Just know none of the above bikes ran as well on low oct gas. The old 7-1 45s would run on anything and had to back in the old days.
