Default The last servicar?

I think the Servicar was produced with a flathead engine thru 1974 but I am not sure. I lived in San Francisco in 1986 and was amazed by the variety of bikes that the SFPD used. there were several examples of Servicars still in service at this time being used for parking detail officers. (Often women) I was wondering if anyone has any info as to what may have become of their fleet? A restored SFPD Servicar would be pretty cool.

Most often as they got old they were auctioned off. '73 was the last year they were produced. I worked for our dealer in the mid to late 70's, the owner was from Germany and advertized a lot in magazines over there. He ended up buying most of them in our area (E Central WI) and we crated them up and sent them over seas. He'd get them for $300-400 and sold them for $1800, most didn't run, some were even half torn down, parts missing.

People want them now but they aren't very practical and take up room, the novelty wears off fast. Top end is only about 45mph, if you re-gear the primary you can sneak 55 out of it, 60 down hill.

The last of them rolled off the line in 73.They are commonly referred to as a G.E. Servicar.General Electric was(I believe)the last major corporation to contract HD to supply them for utility use. Some more trivia for ya...most think that the first electric start Harley was introduced in 1965.A little known fact(to most)is that the first electric start Harley was the 1964 Servicar. Here's a pic of most of one.The rest of the parts are there for this one,and it is for sale,by the way...thanks,Junker.

I think the GE engine number referred to the electric started added to the basic G model, rather than a contract with General Electric? I have a 65GE engine, so they were around for some years.

Hopper...?

is your GE a flat head .. much like the 45WL flat head...?

the reason i ask is i am working on a 1946 old school chopper and the number on the left side of the eng plate is 467 GE 1061.. yet after research the eng is a 45 WL flat head and matches the frame a singial front bar.....could the GE stand for the GE genarator..?

Yes it is a 45 flat head. Same except in a few details as a WL. If your engine were a WL flathead, its engine number would start xxWL, xx being the year number.

Any xxG engine number is a servicar engine, and xxGE is electric start servicar, as far as i know.
