Default 2018 FXLR Lowrider - remove front wheel

I would like to remove the front wheel on this bike to upgrade the rotor. My experience removing front axles is with those that have a nut to remove.

This model year Lowrider axle appears to be like a long bolt that passes thru the right fork and screws into the left. It also appears to require a large hex bit to unscrew the axle. I have been working on my bikes for (a long time) and never seen this configuration. Looks very strong though.

Can someone who has performed removal of the front wheel confirm the above please and the size of the hex bit needed. Looks like it’s 3/4” (or some close metric equivalent).

Thanks!

You may get a better response in the Softail section, there is quite a bit of discussion on the latest bikes in there.

Default 3/4” hex bit was the answer

Thanks for the suggestion.

Just wanted to report back:

I ordered the 3/4” hex bit from Amazon, and with that I was able to easily remove the front axle. The rest of the work was as expected so all went well.

Thumbs up

Good news! If you plan on working on your bike it is well worth getting the FSM, which should answer such queries and a whole lot more.

Agreed! I like to do my own wrenching. So I ordered and just picked up the FSM, the parts, and electrical guides.

I tend to hold on to my bikes, so these are essential.

my heritage 114 has the same axle setup. in reinstalling, I'm a bit afraid of cross threading since the left fork looks to be threaded. will the axle hand tighten easily before torque down to ensure threads are correct? thanks.

The axle is a right-hand thread, so no surprise there. In getting the axle back in there was no more than the usual challenges with the spacers, speed sensor, etc. Replace the anti-seize grease where you find it already applied.

The axle is like a very large bolt. The threads are on the tip end and there are no threads on the head end (right fork). On the Lowrider there is a pinch bolt to loosen on that same side, which is a good indicator that there are no threads involved. 😉

enjoy!

thanks, my heritage has the same setup. I'm going to remove front wheel and try to seal the rim to make it tubeless. already bought all the marine sealant and tape. it looks relatively straight forward, hope it works. if it does, i do the rear next.
