Default Steering Head Lubrication 08 FLHR

I'm getting close to my 10,000 mile servicing and thought I'd go ahead and lube the steering head bearing. The grease fitting itself is located forward in a mess of wires in the lower section of neck. I tried every gease gun I had but no luck getting to it.

Did a search here and a big thank you for the ANSWER!. Either a 45 or 90 degree fitting will make this a breeze! It shouldn't be a problem taking out the old fitting and installing a new one. I'm thinking the Dealer didn't grease this fitting at the 1,000 mile initial servicing since from the looks it's never been touched! Another reason why I'm doing my own wrenching.

I'll be using Mobil 1 Synthetic Bearing grease. Any thoughts or comments on this problem of getting to grease fitting?

Default fitting

I used a 90 degree fitting which works well. The bearings on my 07 Road King came greased from the factory with a bare minimum of grease. It too about a half tube of grease to fill the neck before the grease appeared at the bearings. After that it takes only a few shots to fill it up again.Your choice of grease is right on too.

pmcburne: I will look at picking up today after work the 90 degree fitting since you also ride a Road King. Sounds like it works well. I'll take the old one out first to verify 1/4-28 straight threads before I purchase a new fitting. Thanks for your input!

Default Dry as a bone

Picked up the 1/4-28 90 degree grease fitting from auto parts store (only sold at @ 6 for 3.99). Kind of tricky getting it in since I have ABS wires nearby and I have large long fingers. Once installed hooked up the grease gun and started pumping, and pumping and pumping. Finally grease came out the bottom of neck like service manual said. I must of used at least 3/4 of a tube of lube from a 14oz bottle. Obviously the dealer never even touched this area at the 1,000 mile servicing or re-checked it at the 5,000 mile. Both servicings over $240.

Looks like things will now start being done according to the service manual begining at the 10,000 mile interval.
