Default 1000 Mile Service Question

Just did the 1000 mile service on my 2012 FLHTK.

The service manual says to grease the Steering Head Bearing until grease comes out of the top and bottom of the Steering Head.

I shot about 10 pumps of grease into the Zerk, but still saw no grease coming out of the top or bottom of the Steering Head.

I stopped because I was afraid of blowing a seal for one thing, and also, really don't want grease blowing all over me at 70 mph down the highway.

Anyone used to doing this? Should I just keep pumping grease until I see it oozing out like the manual says? Just seems kinda goofy to me.

Thanks

It takes over half a tube to fill the neck , if you use hi temp grease you will not have a mess just wipe out the excess. If you don't fill the neck there's nothing to push the grease into the bearings where it's needed

The factory only greases the bearings and races. The space inside is still empty.
Go ahead and keep pumping!

You have to keep pumping grease until you see some oozing out from the top bearing area. If you stop when you see grease coming from the lower bearing, there still may not be enough, high enough in the neck, to lube the upper bearing.
I used high temp silicon grease. It doesn't come out the bottom of the neck, when it warms up, as easy as regular grease. This keeps grease from dripping down onto your fender.
There is some that oozes out at the bottom, but none has dripped off the neck yet. About once a month I use a q-tip to clean any grease off the bottom of the neck.

Thanks guys!

I'll just keep pumping it in there. I use Royal Purple, so hopefully it will stay thick enough to not leak on a hot day.

Appreciate the help!
