I just picked up my first FXR on Saturday and thought that I'd introduce myself here. Its a 93 Super Glide. The speedo cable was snapped when I picked it up so I don't know the miles. Its showing 34,xxx or so. I'm not new to Harleys and have had them for 20 odd years or more. I have an early 78 FLH that I'm rewiring now and a 99 Sportster Sport that I really like. That mild cam, the heads and the dual plugs make it a lot of fun. Both of those a pretty well stock and will stay that way. I've got a 69 Triumph Bonneville hardtail that I've had for a long time. For getting around I got an 07 Road King Police and an 11 Heritage Softail. I just picked up a Royal Enfield Int650. Cheap, but fun. It was like going to the Triumph dealership in 71 or 72 and picking up a new bike, except it has fuel injection, ABS and a three year warranty. Anyway. Here's the bike. The pictures are from the sellers listing.
From the seller's post Mostly stock Few chrome bits here and there And orange. Powder coated headlight visor and lower legs.
I met a really cool guy up in the hills of North Carolina that was selling his FXR. I watched the listing for a long while (44 weeks, I think) and then shot him a note telling him what I had and could spend on a bike - and it wasn't what he was asking for. We talked and after a while we came to an agreement, with the caveat I take all the FXR crap that he had. I did. And I'm stoked. There were three seats, windshield and clamps, original mid-controls, some straight through turn out slip-ons and a lot of stuff I'm still sifting through.
I picked it up on Saturday and trailered it home. Hopefully that's the last time it's trailered for a while. I'm just starting to go through it and I'm excited to say it looks mostly stock. There's a bunch of bolt on stuff, but the wiring, etc looks to be stock.
So far I did the usual three hole fluid change. I went with dino rather than any synthetic, given the year. I'll read up on what you guys are normally running. I started looking at the electrics and replaced the starter relay and the battery leads. I unplugged all the connectors and brushed all the corrosion off. Then put some dielectric grease on em. The circuit breakers all looked rusted (but they still work) so for 15 bucks, I'm replacing them. I noticed that it has the screaming eagle ignition module and performance coil on it. Gotta read up on what you think of those too.
I got new brake pads to put in today or tomorrow and will flush the brake system while I'm at it. BTW, DOT5 is damn expensive. I'm waiting on the seal setting tool (I finally bought the fork tube socket for 39mm tubes) to rebuild the front end. The CV carb rebuild kit came in yesterday. 12 bucks! Nice. I'm used to S&S, and that S&S master rebuild kit is a heck of a lot more than that. The speedo cable was snapped when I got it, so I have one coming in. At least I hope its the cable and not the gauge. I'm gonna start saving up again and next go round I'll pick up new cables; throttle and clutch and think about running some new brake lines.
Only problem I've had so far is getting the tappet oil screen screw out. That thing does not want to come out! Below is the impact driver and socket tool I was using. The socket falls off the end of the extension, so I taped it on. Any suggestions on getting this off would be appreciated. One thing I just read was someone saying to get dry ice from the grocery store and freezing the screw. Never thought about that. Fire is what usually comes to mind.
Any look outs that you guys might know about or things to check on - I'd appreciate the input! Looking forward to learning more about these bikes and meetin' you guys. Take care.
Congrats, 44 week for a FXR to sell? He must have been really high with the asking. I see a pic with mid rear brake pedal but looks to have been converted to forwards. Did you get the mids with all the parts?
Have fun and yes DOT 5 expensive but you don't have to worry about the moisture content like DOT4 and nice that 5 doesn't ruin your paint.
