Whitebird Switchback Spiral Idaho
Recently saw an old postcard featuring this road; does it still exist? Where in Idaho? Goggle maps didn't help me

And if you scroll down about 1/3 of a page this article talks about the Lewiston Spiral.

My father in law and I just rode it a few months ago. Yup, it's still there, and the best part?
There's nobody on it but you. Pavement's decent.
It's the old route of US 95. Get off 95 at Whitebird, ID. It's tiny, there's only one main street, so just turn north and follow it out of town. It will take you through that section and back to 95. It's only a couple of miles long.

Sharkey, we have several "Dragons" here in the area. One of the best, and one that frequently brings riders from Canada, is known as Rattlesnake Grade. It's Route 129 out of Clarkston or Asotin Washington, and it runs to Enterprise Oregon. It's a spectacular, gorgeous ride in its own right, but the curvy part is world class. Not too slow, and the blacktop is brand new!

Some pics from along the route, just to make you think about spring!

panz4ever, the "Old Spiral Highway" is the old route of US 95 out of Lewiston going north, up Lewiston Hill.
It's brand new blacktop, and all you need to know is in this one word: "technical".
Think you can ride? Want some practice? It's 20-30 mph curves one after the other, and dropoffs if you screw up. It's only about 5 miles from my house, and I go out and run up to the top, make a u-turn, and come back down whenever I get the urge. Here are some pics from it. That's the road just below. I live just off camera left, on the far side of the river.

MAKE SURE you ride US 12 from Lewiston, ID to Missoula, MT. The rides I've talked about above are pretty short, but this one is 200 miles. Take lots of pics, because there are plenty of places to pull over:
(Btw, in the winter in a car, it will take your breath away.)

True story: Several years ago, before we moved there, I was on my regular visit to my inlaws. I left early in the morning to head back to Chicago. Late March, if I remember. It was raining when I left their house.
US 12 takes you over Lolo Pass, a bit over 5,000'.
Halfway there, it started to snow. Then it started snowing harder. By this time I'm the only car on the road. Not even a track. I had already passed a spot where there was a loooong, swinging spiral set of tracks across the center line and back. Talk about a butt-tightener.
The worst part? I'm driving a Jaguar, 280hp, big, fat rear tires, and rear wheel drive. I left it in second gear, and all I kept telling myself was: "...smooth...smooth...keep it smooth...".
Made it. Never again.
