This isnt meant as any kind of a slam on dealership people - sales, service, parts, whatever, just a question about the dealership folks you know.

Do they monitor or participate in internet forums like this one? I know of about three other Harley forum sites and they pretty much cover the same topics (one might be a bit more technical than the others), and this one seems to get the most traffic out of the ones I've watched.

I ask because I've mentioned things like M8 oil problems, or Harley EPA lawsuits, etc to dealership people and I usually get something along the lines of "I haven't heard of anything like that" or "We haven't had any warranty issues at all" as answers.

I would've thought a good salesperson or service rep might at least want to watch and read a forum like this one.

I have been eyeing this forum for several years now.I have picked up some pretty useful information, and have also seen some down right misinformation. This can sometimes be a hostile site when it comes to dealerships and their personnel, they are accused of many things.I'm sure some of the dealers are guilty of less than honorable business practices, but for the most part a lot of them are like any other business that has to make a profit to survive.
I have been a tech at a Harley dealer since 1979,and have seen many changes in how the dealerships operate over the years.and customer expectations.Trust me ,it has been one hell of a ride, for the most part it has been a great ride.I just hope a lot of you realize when someone comes on here complaining about a dealer, there are two sides to every story.
I love it when a bike comes into the shop and the owner complaining about an electrical issue, and we take the seat or fairing off to start diagnosing, and find a huge mass of non stock wiring with cuts and splices powering God only knows what they were trying to accomplish.Just one example of what we techs are dealing with. One final thought the tech or techs at your dealership are usually dealing with one of the most molested brands of motorcycle on the planet.

The people working at the dealership are representing the company. 9 out of 10 times, they have to keep their mouths shut or face the consequences of being unemployed.

Forums like HTT make it possible for employees to release restricted material and not face any consequences.

Yeah no. If you are paid to sell ****, you have to say it smells good. If you know of somebody that thinks it stinks, you have to say it smells good. If everyone are saying it is putrid, your job is not to sell putrid things, so you say it smells good. Welcome to the real world.

Not saying Harley is **** though. But if i have to sell you a harley, you be sure i tell you it's the best ****ing bike you can get.

As a general rule, no - they don't.

I'm an airline pilot, and I've never participated or even visited the FlyerTalk forums. I don't even care what they discuss, complain to each other or glad-hand each other about.

Dealerships don't want us to get on forums like this one to discuss/solve problems. They want us to bring the bike in and let them fix it.

Do you think a guy that shovels sh*t all day goes on the Septic Tank forum at night?

Ive heard more than one dealer rep brush off anything mentioned in the same breath as the word "forum". To them, if it comes from a forum, it's automatically bad information.
