I use a nylon strap oil wrench to remove my filters and I own a Harley filter wrench. Strap wrench works better. Buy a service manual, watch some YouTube. There is a lot of how to on the Internet.

I just got my 5k service done today. I actually have 7k on the bike but decided to wait a little on the service. It only cost me $45. I do all the fluids myself and retorque the majority of the fasteners. I take it to them so I get a receipt saying they looked it over for liability reasons.

started doing my own service the last time, only thing that threw me was the 3/8" hex wrench needed for the tranny dipstick. All my sets ended one short.

The HD oil filter is cheap and has a cutout to clear the sensor so you don't damage it.

When you think about it the bike has 5000 miles on it. What could it possibly need besides a fluid change and/or few minor adjustments?

The dealership will take the bike, change the fluids called for and give a once over to make sure everything is good.
OP would be paying close to 400 dollars for a glorified oil change.

First thing to do is get yourself a service manual all the info you need is there. Document all your work and save your receipts. This is what i was told when talked with a Harley Rep from there Factory I'm Milwaukee. We can do our own maintenance as long as you have the skills and follow the service manual, Save some money why not good luck enjoy and Ride Safe.

Just did my wife's Sporty this weekend. Like my other bikes, I notate in the service manual the date of the service and save receipts. I also take a pic of the odometer with a date stamp and a pic of the oil and filter laid out next to the bike also date stamped.

I found these KN filters (https://www.knfilters.com/search/pro...x?prod=KN-171B) You don't need the special filter wrench to remove them. Also, you can order them at Wal-Mart for about $8.00 each (https://www.walmart.com/ip/K-N-KN-17...&wl13=&veh=sem)

Default Do it all

If you want to learn, then change all the holes. It waill also give you a cance to use a better gear oil if you choose. I would reccomend new non torx fasteners for the derby cover. Don't forget a little ant-seize . You may have to cut down,or get a ball end allensocket to get the tranny filler plug on /off.Good luck.
