SO I'm getting closer to the 5000 mile mark on the bike. What all is entailed in the 5k service, and would it be cheaper for me to get a Know Thy Hog DVD and do it myself? Thanks for the help.
do an oil change. seriously, they rape you at the dealer. i think it's 200 some odd dollars for the 5k service. they walk around the bike and see if anything is out of place, tighten a bolt here and there and change the oil. go to wally world and pick up an oil filter for 5 bucks, a couple liters of rotella t, and a six pack of beer.
edit- my source is a harley mechanic. i've wrenched bikes for maybe 3 years now, it's easy work. hell, i'm a computer tech and i can handle it.
Yes get the Hog DVD. It's money well spent. When you see him change the oil, you'll rub your **** thinking man it hurts just coming from the stealer. Thinking they didn't even buy me dinner.
Speaking of the 5000 service, I was looking at that in the back of the owner manual. It mentioned replacing the brake fluid and ALL rubber brake components every two years. How many people really do this? Also the primary chain adjustment, it said 3/8 - 1/2 inch of play when it is hot. I checked mine again last night, it was warm, not cold. It seems to be always in the specs.
And then the drive belt, does anyone really check this and need to adjust it? I can see adjusting it to specs when you get the tire replaced, but in between tires, mine seems to be within specs all the time.
