Default Sticker shock on a new Service Manual

So I recently bought a 1999 1200-S. The last time I bought a HD Service Manual was in 2012 for my RKC and I think I paid $80 back then. Today I went to my local HD dealer and the manual for the Sporty is $129, plus tax = $139. I hadn't priced it before I went, so I was a bit stunned at the cost. I understand prices go up, but this increase seems a bit extreme. Yes, I bought it. Luckily I had a $20 gift card from the dealer, so that helped. And I know that using it just a few times will pay for it, and I will use it. I've also spent more on stuff a lot less useful, so there's that.

So pretty soon I'll be RTFM!!!

It’s still is worth every $. Pays for itself the first time you use it.

Well, the bikes are priced so cheap they have to make money somewhere.

Service manuals are expensive because Harley shoots themselves in the foot with each one sold.

All I can say on this subject is that we're fortunate to still be able to buy printed manuals for the Harleys. For some bikes, it's only on CD-ROM (which still isn't bad, since you can print relevant pages and rarely need more than a few), but for others, like Ducati, there are NO factory service manuals available. Period.

And as someone who made a living doing lots of technical writing (among other things), the H-D manuals are very well written and complete.

In the space of maybe one day's time, all of the FSM prices doubled...and it was last year, I believe, so you got in before the lock! So to speak...

I bought mine for my RoadKing from the discount table. Price was $15; I chewed 'em down to $10.

I bought my FLHR manual on EBay. If you’re patient you can find a deal. I don’t care if it’s got greasy fingerprints on it

Yes they literally went from $60 to $129 overnight. I had a gift card for the HD shop so I went in to pick up a couple of things and visit with some people I hadn't seen in a long time. Service Manuals are not only behind the counter now, but in the back room with the non accessory parts.
