RIDE BELL
Who here has one? Was it given to ya from a friend? I'm thinking since I am getting a new bike should I take the bells off my old bike and put them on my new one or just wait to receive one from one of my buddies. The two I have on my bike now came from my son and my wife. I have one attached under each one of the drivers foot pegs. I'm thinking about hanging them in the garage after I sell the bike. What is your input?

I'm sure there has to be something in the tradition that either allows or forbids the transferring of the bell. However, if I wasn't in violation of the "rules" I think it would be kool to keep it hanging somewhere as a keep-sake.

I've always heard that you should never buy your own bell & that it's good form to offer to leave it on a bike when you sell it. I've sold a few bikes & the new owners have all be honored to recieve the bell with the bike. Passing on a blessing so to speak. If a new owner didn't want it, I would keep it. I've seen several used bikes for sale at dealers that still have bells on them.

I can see a good argument for both keeping it on the old bike when you sell it and taking it off for your new bike.
Keeping it on the bike:
Consider that as passing on the good karma. The new owner will already have had someone "give" him the protection of the bells (bells not included in price of bike so he didn't BUY the bells ). This goes a long way in strengthening the brotherhood, I think.
Taking them off the old bike for use on your old:
Those bells can become HIGH in sentimental value.
They are usually given to you by someone that means a lot to you so...
Taking them off for use on the new bike may be your ONLY choice.
I don't have one on my bike, I guess no one loves me enough to give me one...
I have givenbells though.
I think the legend is a little flakey, but the gesture is just a way of saying "I'm with you in spirit" and "call me if you ever need anything" while you ride your bike.

RE: RIDE BELL
I have one hanging on my bike, given to me by my wife (before we were married). She got it while we were on our first vacation in Flordia and got it while we were visiting HD of Stewart. So when I am ready to get a new bike and get rid of mine I think I will end up taking it off and keeping it just because it holds sentimental value. I don't think there is a rule against that, but I think I will need a new bell for the new bike.
