oil levels with oil cooler
Ok, i had the 103 c.i. kit installed with screamin eagle roller rockers, S&S 570g cams, 1.4k starter, and an oil cooler. I did the 500 mile break in per the mechanics reccomendations, and then changed the oil, using Mobil 1 V-Twin. My question is that there is a certain amount of oil left in the oil cooler at all times. Does this change the amount of oil needed on a change? I previously used 3.5 qts. and my levels on the stick were good, so i used 3.5 at 500 miles, warmed the engine per the manual and checked it and it was appx. .5 qt low. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Oh and yeah what a heck of a difference at the throttle. I dont have numbers yet but will after about 1.2k or so which should be about next weekend.

Am considering the oil cooler myself. Would be interested in seeing the answer to your question. A guess would be the oil cooler lines and cooler hold 1/2 qt but that seems a lot?

Yes, you will need a small amount increase in your oil when you change it now. Just experiment until you know exactly how much to add. Remember, it's better to be a little low than to over fill. You'll be blowing oil out of your breather and really mess up your ride. When I put a cooler on my 90 Ultra it added approx. 1/2 quart.

I also had to add about a pint to my normal 4 qt oil change when I first installed an oil cooler on my FLHTCUI. BUT that was a one time add. At each subsequent change I only need 4 qts. That extra pint just sits in the oil cooler between changes. The cooler is too low on the bike for the oil to drain out via the oil tank or the filter.
