i have a 1980 sturgis that i picked up 6 years ago. this is one bad *** bike. it still gets up. real biker chicks love the look. as well as myself.
mostly original except for the typical replacements like phython pipes, seat and s&s carb.
this is my 3rd shovel and has always had good luck with them. i don't care what anyone says these babies haul *** and stand out. the tranny seal is leaking and i will be tearing into it very soon.
could use any advice on that matter. i'm getting older now and may go to a flh shovel but hope i can afford to keep this bad boy forever.
good luck. cisco

Newbie here!
G'mornin' Fellas,
I am new to this site (obviously!). I am getting back into Bikes, and am looking for insight from all of you.
In 1980 I purchased a new Harley XLS, and while I liked it, I always wanted an FL or better. One day, in 1981, one of my best friends rides up on a brand new FXB Sturgis-I was in love, and was in awe of that beast.
Anyway, I'm older now, the kids are finally gone, I have a bunch of disposable Income and I want to spend it on a Sturgis. I did a Search here, and have read most all of the Threads here regarding them, but I wondered if any of you could give me some more insight.
I really love the look of the original Sturgis, but after reading about them here, it appears that there was a problem with the Primary Belt Drive and heat, causing the Belt to fail-true? How long would the Primary Belt live with a stock Engine? Is it difficult to replace? Other than the fact that it truly is an Antique by now, any other problems with the Shovelhead or the original Sturgis?
How about the 1991 Sturgis? I realize it would be a step up with the Engine being rubber mounted, the five speed and all, and the style doesn't move me as much as the original, but I could live with it. Any problems with this Model or the Evo? Could you please explain to me the differences in the Frame between the original Sturgis (1980) and the DynaGlide Chassis? Anything else I should know?
I am looking for any and all input here-I realize these aren't new Designs or Models, but I want a Sturgis and want to choose the best Model-
Thanks for allowing me on this Board, I look forward to learning from all of you!

Well id go after the 82 or 83 FXB just to get away from the AMG stigma. I have an 82 and after selling it in 2000, bought it back this summer. Had one primary belt go on me but that was an extremely hard throttle going from 2nd to 3rd gear after a fresh rebuild...I do have a vented primary though and have had it since i first boutght it in 87. I have a softail as well but love my shovel. the 91 FXDB is a nice looker too though...Im just biased with the shovel. Good luck
My 82 has leaked tranny oil for years and years. I keep the turkey baster with me for that. Everyone that tears into it seems to say the same thing: just give her a squirt now and then. It is only about an once or so after a 250-300 mile ride. I love the 4 speed, had hell trying to get use to this 6 and don't ever wanna change it to a 5 like my buddies have. Got back the narrow glide front (used a wide for years) and all the decals. Need the dash back, some "wrench" stole the original (worked an HD shop, can you imagine?) so other then swap meets, where can I look for the dash and the belt guard with the black/orange writing on it?
I own an '81 Sturgis, love the bike, belt drive isn't an issue, it just didn't catch on back then, now everybody is putting aftermarket beltdrives on their bikes after seeing how reliable they really are, I live in AZ and we KNOW the heat, havn't had an issue with mine, changing the primary belt is easy, final drive belt is a pain since you have to remove primary to get to it unlike a chain but that is with any secondary belt drive whether you have a belt or chain primary. The only downside is finding original parts as there were so few made, as you can see from mine not much but engine and tranny are about all thats left of the original bike. I would love to restore mine to original(I remember all the old 70 SS chevelle's and 67 camaro SS's that ended up chopped up and on race tracks around the country and what they are worth today. If you get a chance at a first generation Sturgis, Take it now before the Shovels cost as much as the Panheads do now.
