Default FXB or FXDB?

Newbie here!

G'mornin' Fellas,

I am new to this site (obviously!). I am getting back into Bikes, and am looking for insight from all of you.

In 1980 I purchased a new Harley XLS, and while I liked it, I always wanted an FL or better. One day, in 1981, one of my best friends rides up on a brand new FXB Sturgis-I was in love, and was in awe of that beast.

Anyway, I'm older now, the kids are finally gone, I have a bunch of disposable Income and I want to spend it on a Sturgis. I did a Search here, and have read most all of the Threads here regarding them, but I wondered if any of you could give me some more insight.

I really love the look of the original Sturgis, but after reading about them here, it appears that there was a problem with the Primary Belt Drive and heat, causing the Belt to fail-true? How long would the Primary Belt live with a stock Engine? Is it difficult to replace? Other than the fact that it truly is an Antique by now, any other problems with the Shovelhead or the original Sturgis?

How about the 1991 Sturgis? I realize it would be a step up with the Engine being rubber mounted, the five speed and all, and the style doesn't move me as much as the original, but I could live with it. Any problems with this Model or the Evo? Could you please explain to me the differences in the Frame between the original Sturgis (1980) and the DynaGlide Chassis? Anything else I should know?

I am looking for any and all input here-I realize these aren't new Designs or Models, but I want a Sturgis and want to choose the best Model-

Thanks for allowing me on this Board, I look forward to learning from all of you!

The original Sturgis was built on the original 4 speed frame which was used with some variations from 1958 to 1986. It was use on the Electrglides (FL) and the Superglides (FX) the major difference between the two at that time being the front end. The original Stugis edition was built on this frame and designated FXB. The B stood for belt drive. When Harley went to rubber mount and 5 speeds, the came out with the FXR frame for the Suprglide series. It was a very nice frame but it steered to far away from the traditional "Harley look". In 1988 Harley came out with the Dyna Superglide. It was still rubber mount and 5 speed but went back towards the tradional look. The FXD was first released in the Daytona version. The second edition Stugis came out in 91. Both editions of the Stugis were all black with Orange trim. They are both very nice Bikes in my opinion and I wouldnt want to have to choose between them,

I'd take either of them, both sweet bikes. They are considered collectible bikes and will fetch a premium even in this shiiity economy. Good luck on your search.

Cam covered the bases.
The guy who does my machining work (airline mech for yrs, festidious!!!) restored an original Sturgis, and his wife rides it.
ANY V twin with a belt drive primary, NEEDS ventilation. HEAT kills belts. I run BDLs on both my pan and shovel. The belt in my pan is 6 yrs old, this year, and still doing just fine, Thank You.
The shovel ATE belts like a drunken sailor when I got it finished the first go 'round. Turns out, ring gear was not seated all the way, on the clutch hub. ( Took the IDIOT 2 belts to finger it out. That IDIOT would be ME!!!!!! )

I just saw a Sturgis listed on line in the past couple of weeks. I will go to my regular sites, to see if I can relocate it, and post it for ya.
Ain't nuthin wrong with a shovel. I like knucks, pans, n shovels. YOU can git UP CLOSE and personal with 'em. WELL, actually, YOU HAVE to git up close and personal, to git home on 'em. LMAO, jus' feedin' the "doubters".

My brother has a '91 Sturgis, I had an '81 back in '86 or so.

I never had any problems with the primary belt and I really loved that bike.

Sold it for $6500 in 1989 to get my second Softail.

Wish I still had it (along with a few others I've let get away over the years).
