This is an extract from "The police riders handbook to better motorcycling"

Sequential changing
"With this technique, the engine braking helps to slow the machine. The apprpriate gear for the speed is engaged throughout, and because the drive is engaged except during changes, the bike remains stable. The rider also has the option of immediate power if needed."

A later paragraph goes on to say, "Use the brakes rather than the gears to slow the machine (except during hill descents and when there is a risk of skidding."

In both cases the clutch should only be disengaged when changing and just befor coming to a standstill.

The above is obviously part of a whole chapter on "breaking and changing gear", and really needs to be read in context. I can highly recomend the book, it is written for UK riders, but much would still apply.

Rear brakes are unnecessay on most modern biker(harleys the exception).
I use the rear brake in tandem with the front brake to minimize front-end dive.

Wouldn't know how to ride without downshifting - been doing it for over 30 years
