Planning Rides & Downloading to GPS
I just got a GPS for Fathers Day and was wondering what the best way was to plan rides on the computer and then be able to download them to the GPS. I know on the H-D web site there is a Ride Planner that lets you do this but for some reason when it downloads the routes to the GPS it breaks it up into several smaller rides and you have to reset the route at each way point. How do you guys do it, is there a web site that lets you plan out rides and download them to the GPS?
Thanks,
bh

If you want to use the ride planner without breaking up the route. Select your start and end points, then drag the route to the roads you want to take which creates waypoints.
The more "destinations" you select, the more segments you will get.
On longer trips I like the longer segments, usually one day each. I just rename them after they are on the GPS. First leg starts with 01, second with 02, etc. so they stay in order.

I plan all of mine with the software that came with the GPS. makes it real easy to load into the unit that way, and you are working with the same "Language" so you don't need to convert file types.
I play around with Microsoft Streets and Trips as its more user freindly than the Garmin MapSource program, but once I figure it out, I route it all on Mapsource and then onto the GPS

I just use a paper map or maps and write the route in sequence on a piece of paper, that goes in a handy pocket for quick reference. I haven't been lost yet in 42 years of riding.

HD Ride Planner sucks!
You didn't say what GPS you're using. If it's a Zumo, you should have the Mapscource City Navigator software. If not, and your GPS is able to accept routes, either purchase the program or friend a friend that has it and install it on your computer. Even though the program is locked to a single GPS unit, the lock only prevents you from transfering MAPS to and from the unit. Since all the maps are already loaded into the GPS this is not a problem and you'll be able to transfer ROUTES, WAYPOINTS and TRACKS.

I have a Zumo 450, I got to looking around and found the CD that has the Navigator software on it. Looks a little cumbersome but I think with a little pratice it should solve the problem. Thanks guys for the help.
