Yep, that might work as well if you're that technically challenged.

FYI: the Op didn't ask for an opinion on whether or not to use a GPS. He ask for information on the best way to plan rides on the computer and then be able to download them to the GPS.

I downloaded a couple of the madmaps from the Garmin website...not bad but helps to have the regular maps to get an idea of where exactly the rides are at. I'm down here in Texas...It's LARGE! I'm going to use the mapsource from now on while planning rides...much easier than the HD ride planner.

Same here. I use Garmin MapSource to do final planning and Microsoft Streets and Trips to do preliminary planning. If anyone wants to know the details send me an e-mail.
