I finally got a Garmin that supports routing (Nuvi 55LM) my others do not (Nuvi 1300 + 50). Anyway, still couldn't get the damned thing to accept exact turn by turn directions. It would change routes no matter what I tried. Gave up on HD Ride Planner. Mapquest wouldn't work if I dragged the routes to where I wanted. Then, using Mapquest, I started right clicking along the route. When the dialog box appears, click "add to route". I think you can put as many of these as required into the route + it'll pass thru each point along the way. Then transfer to GPS as a "route". Anyway, hope this helps others like myself having trouble downloading exact directions into their GPS. My only question now is, how can I create a file of that route so I can share with others before a ride? Anyone know?
Another vote for Basecamp. If it's been a few years, then you may want to give it another go; it takes a little bit to get the hang of it, but there are tutorial videos at start-up that are very helpful. Once you get how it works, it's great. Save the route as a gpx file and download it to your Garmin or share it, it even works better than anything else I have tried on the new Boom GPS.
I'll jump on the Basecamp train as well. It does take a little bit of time to learn but from my experiences, it is the best software for custom routing on the Garmin.
Awww man, now I feel bad guys. Am I really the only applehead in the group? I'll give Basecamp another try, but it was sure not "user friendly" the first go around.
I use Mapsource, but unfortunately Garmin does not support it any more. Can't figure out why, it is the easiest to use of all. If my computer ever goes down, I'm screwed.
Yeah...another vote for BaseCamp. Domecofvthecfunctions are not logical. But, after beating on it, it seems to work.
But, beware of creating custom routes when on divided highways. If you inadvertently click on the other direction lane it will take you there.
i learned (the hard way) after making my route to 'proof' it. zoom in as much as you can and follow the route. you will quickly and easily find where you have inadvertently put a waypoint 100 feet off the road, or on the south side of a northbound route. much easier to fix it then on your computer than it is to second guess your gps while on a trip.
