Default Painting helmets

I have a half helmet I bought when I got the bike and the color is called Black chrome and it looks ok but after having it awhile i wish I would of gotten a flat black with ghost flames or something like that. Anybody ever paint a helmet with success?

I painted my helmet from gloss black to flat black this past summer. Just used regular Rustoleum spray cans. I think the secret is several thin light coats instead of one or two heavy coats. It has been holding up great so far.

I think I will give it a shot myself. I just dont like the shiny black chrome now that Ive had it awhile.If I was talented I would somehow put a design in it but Im no Chip Foose.

Paint a helmet the same way you'd paint any plastic. On most of them, I just scuff them up and shoot them. If the helmet has issues (nicks, chips, scratches...) I'll sand those out, sand down to the primer, possibly shoot another coat of primer & sand that out, then shoot them.

On rare occasions I'll take them down to the plastic, shoot adhesion promoter, then shoot my color over that (without primer).

Take everything off/out of the helmet that you can. You should be able to get it down to just the plastic shell & the Styrofoam type liner. *** It is imperative you NOT get any paint on the foam liner as the solvents will eat the foam and compromise the helmet. So, make sure you mask it off extremely well.

In case one had a concern with the integrity of the shell, most helmet manufacturers say if you paint the shell you will degrade the integrity of the helmet and if it had a warranty it will be voided. That is if one had that concern.

Was that a china made helmet that had a warranty on it. I have never had anybody send there helmet back for warranty work.

Just so you know that once you scratch the paint. The helmet has lost some of its protective barrier. The paint actually acts as part of the protective coating in case of a crash. I used to sell helmets and if they were scratched or even scuffed we had to send them back to be crushed. Could not be sold or even clearenced out due to law suites. I would try to paint it without sanding if it was possible.

No big deal. I painted a 1/2 from gloss to Flat Black Wrinkle. I like it alot, and get a lot of comments on it. Doesn't show the scuffs either. Pretty simple to do. Key is light coats, dry, and reshoot.....
