Cutting open your oil filter might be a good preliminary check, to look for lil orange bits.

I swapped my oil pump for an S+S unit on my '86 Evo FXST 'bout 20 years ago. Had the manual and it was a real easy job. Unfortunately, more difficult now with the TC motors.
