Strawberries - Death - Destruction
Damn what a weekend! Wife and I left Saturday morning for the Strawberry Festival in Ponchatoula La. A little cool for an early morning ride (45*) but not too bad.
We enjoyed most of the day at the festival then decided Middendorf's for dinner that evening. The food sucked. This absolutely the worst meal we have had there, ever. Anyway, wife wanted a smoke which delayed our departure about 5 minutes for our ride back to Hammond where we were spending the night.
Up I-55 we went when traffic began peeling left and right. A black Escalade went into the median from the left hand lane, over corrected sling shotting it across to the right hand lane where it side swiped a Ford Focus. The Focus left the Interstate to the right through a barrier, striking a parked dump truck and over turning.
The couple in the Focus were killed. The woman was ejected and the man, who was wearing a seatbelt, was killed instantly. This happened about 6:30pm and if the wife hadn't wanted a smoke, well......
Saturday night less than a mile from our hotel also on I-55 a couple from Tennessee on a motorcyle were killed. For some reason the man, a 47 year old, lost control of said bike, laid it down on the Interstate where both he and his passenger were run over by vehicles in trail killing both. This happened at about 9:15pm.
Sunday morning wife wanted another smoke which delayed our departure once again when we rolled upon another motorcycle wreck. One man laying in the area between the merge lane and the southbound lane of the Interstate. The police or emergency service had not yet responed. No one was tending to the guy, the people who did stop were trying to direct traffic leading us to believe he too was gone.
Point???? The ATTGATT thread. All the bikers were geared up. The victims in the Focus, one wearing seatbelt one not.
This gave us a very uneasy feeling, 5 deaths in a little over 12 hours. I was wanting to get home.
It is early in the season so a little paractice may be in order. Ride like you are invisible and you won't be disappointed. And be careful out there.
Sorry for such a morbid post.
BTW the strawberries were excellent and other than this the festival was great. A lot of good people in Hammond/Ponchatoula.

Sounds like a point could also be made regarding new found health benefits of smoking.
