Unhappy New 2010 Ultra - For 8 miles

Been lurking here for awhile and need some help - Please ?

Picked up a 2010 Ultra yesterday. I left the dealer in and entered heavy traffic for the next 8 miles, never left second gear. At the 8 mile mark the bike sounded like it was rapping and banging so bad that I shut it down and pulled into the break down lane. This was no normal Harley sound it was NASTY!

Called the dealer to have him pick it up and find out what was wrong. While I was waiting I started the bike and .......NO bad sounds. Go figure. Dealer said I may have rolled the throttle into "parade mode" New to me I didn't know I could do that on a 2010. As a matter of fact the salesman told me that it happens automatically at a certain temp.

So finally heres the question part:
Anyone else's bike make these types of noises?
If I or it went into parade mode is the sound normal?
What damage may have occured?
What do you think the dealer will say?

Thanks in advance.

The change in sound is "should" be very minimal when it gets to one cylinder shutdown mode ( hot ). Do a 8 mile reverse trip, going slow but heading toward the dealer that way they can hear it when you arrive. Lleave the bike running and run in and grab one of the guys so they can hear it.

My SG makes a clanking / chattering noise sometimes when first taking off, they could not duplicate it when in the shop for the first two services but luckily it did it when I was pulling the bike into the service area the last time I took it in. They heard it that time, everyone turned around to see what bike was making all of the racket.....

Default Parade mode

The same thing happened to me when I bought my 09 Heritage. I was sitting at a light and all of a sudden the bike starts shaking and the engine is missing and sounds like I fouled a plug. A quick twist of the throttle and all was well. Got home and looked in the owners manual and discovered the bike had this heat control system. Basically, when the heads reach a certain temp the rear cylinder shuts down both spark and fuel. When you twist the throttle it comes back on line. I called the dealer and talked to the service mgr. because here in Las Vegas it is hot and it comes on quite often. He said not to worry won't hurt the engine. He also said that if I wanted they could disable it. But yes, the first time was scary, I thought wtf was wrong with the bike. So, you can live with it or have the dealer disable it.

Was the sound loud and nasty like metal to metal banging? This wasn't what has been described as less noise it was more.

Dealer called:

1. The bike went into parade mode because of the heat and sitting in traffic.

2. The codes showed rich running front and rear cylinders.

3. Said that its is normal during the break in period.

What do you think? Please ...............

I think you're OK. The codes make sense as reported by the dealer. That being said, a couple of thoughts:
Removing the cat from the header (fullsac.com), freeing up the exhaust (new slip-ons or fullsac baffles), SE air cleaner and a dyno tune to get the air/fuel ratio or AFR right will make a HUGE difference in how your bike performs and cool it off a bunch.

And, you got the extended warranty, right?

I think I'd stay off the freeway during rush hour especially when trying to do the break-in. Parade mode is normal but you don't want to do it again anytime soon. Read the manual on break-in.
