Default excessive oil use in '10 heritage softail

The story is as follows; I bought the heritage with 1004 miles at dealership. They told me 1000 mile service was completed and I was to ride the **** out of it. Eight hundred miles later i was a quart low in oil. I was told that was normal. Dealership changed the oil and filter for good faith. Now the bike has 1850 miles and full of oil. After 500 miles of riding I am a half-quart low again. Can anyone tell me when the excessive oil using starts? Does this sound like valve guide seals going bad? No leaks or no smoke,,,,,,,,,,Need help.

Not normal at all.

I bought my 08 with 6 miles on the clock 2 years ago last May. I now have right under 24k miles on her.

Does not use a drop between changes.

Does it smoke at all? Maybe the rings didn't seat properly during break-in?

If the selling dealer keeps insisting it's normal, try a different dealer.

Take it back, pronto! The oil is going somewhere. Rings not seated or valve guide seals, but I haven't heard of seal problems since '05. H-D will tell you a quart/1000 is within normal limits; bullshit! Most Harley's will not use more than a half quart per 5K, some none at all.

NOT normal. I've heard of no such oil usage on '09 or '10 models at all. I do know the '05's had bad valve guide seals and my '05 EGC used about 1.5 quarts between 5k oil changes. My '09 RK right now has 31k on it and has not used a single drop of oil. I just rode from San Diego to Quincy, ILL (2000 miles) and not a drop used. So somethin is wrong. Find a different dealer as said above.

Default excessive oil

All you guys that said that it was to much oil was correct. I took the bike back to the dealership and they showed me the correct way to check the oil. I was the village idiot today and embarressed as well. Now I know the correct way to check the oil. Lesson learned,
