Default Newbie Question about Vin placement

i have the chance to get a 84 shovelhead bottom end but i have one draw back. i cant seem to find and numbers on the outside of the cases othe than a three digit w91 stamped on the bottom side of the cases. i have looked in front of the lifter block looked everywhere for any sign of tampering and the only thing i have seen is in the cam chest under the fron lifter block it has a ground spot. not a typical spot for a vin. just looking for some info. dont want to buy stolen property. dont want to look like a dumb@$$ taking a piece of stolen property to the cop shop. is there any way to lift number with outgoing to the fuz and having them acid test it.

Probably replaced with aftermarket case. Not uncommon with Shovels, anything can be bought for one.The factory numbers were on the right side on top, very visible.

No numbers--means that ownership will be disputable. Your monkey if you buy it. JMO.
