Default Rebuilding starters??

Friend of mine went to the local HD shop to buy/order a new starter clutch assembly. The counter guy told him that soon you will not be able to buy parts for HD starters from Harley. Apparently harley knows that their starters are a piece of junk and does not want to miss out on the opportunity to reap the profits.....Clutch $120 New starter $375+. Either way there is still after market stuff

Car mfg's have gone to the disposible route years ago.
There are still some parts you can rebuild if you can find the repair parts.

The OEM starter that came with my Low Rider was a POS from the beginning, even with a brand new fully charged battery could barely turn over the stock engine. Went with a Twin Power starter for around $200 and it worked way better, but that was short lived as the sealed bearings were cheap chinese crap and leaked primary oil into the starter. Then Got a Drag Specialties starter for about $280 and no problems, starts instantly, hot or cold. I replaced the bearings in the Twin Power starter with decent sealed bearing and keep it on the shelf for a spare in case the DS goes.

The starter clutch from Toyota is part # 54-82401. It can be cross referenced at napa.

I have heard that before. I wonder if they are any better quality wise.
