My starter died on my 03 wide glide. Not much warning, just 3 starts making a squealing noise and then nothing but spinning.
I yanked the jack shaft assembly and starter and then tore it down to find out what the problem was. Turned out to be the output shaft and the starter clutch had too much wear on them.
So, I called the Stealer to buy the output shaft, starter clutch, idler gear along with the bearings and cage. I fugured I would just replace all the wear components all at once and be done with it.
Lucky me, Harley doesn't sell any parts or rebuild kits for the starter! I had to buy a whole new frickin starter at a cost of over $350 when a $25 rebuild kit would have done the job!
This is just wrong! I get pissed when I feel like I'm getting screwed by HD and I'm pissed! The bike is not that old and rebuild kits should be available for such a common problem! It's not the money, it's the principle! Grrrrrrr
Does anyone know where I can get a rebuild kit for the HD starter?
End of rant. Bob

Did you first check the aftermarket before spending $350 at harley? I wonder if you couldn't have found a comparable or better quality starter cheaper.
Look for a manufacturer on the starter. HD doesn't make starters, they buy them. I learned a long time ago that with a little research you can avoid getting bent over by HD. Shop around.
I was just starting my vacation and had a trip planned. I couldn't wait 2 or 3 days for the starter, I had to go to the dealer. I just think the parts should have been available. Bob
Parts are available, just not from the dealer. Most dealers do not have infinite space to warehouse parts. The aftermarket usually does. You could have had the parts shipped overnight although you would have paid through the nose.
I'd say buy what you need and return the starter to the dealer stating some reason. Worst they can say is no.
My starter went out a little after the warranty expired. The Stealership applied for a good will claim but it was denied. Haven't had a lot of problems with her though...
