crank pins

crank pins
I am rebuilding a 1974 74" shovel. The original crankpin had one oil hole, now you can get pins with 2 or 3 holes. Can anybody help me out with witch one I should use and why I should go that way. Thanks

Get a decent one like Jims and go a 2 hole on a stock build . Single isn't bad either , problem with the 3 hole is over oiling and the bearing slide over the pins instead taking the load and rolling like they are designed to and what happens is the crank pins start cratering or spalling . I've changed out a bucket full of them over the years that's gone bad .

There were a lot of tech articles in the more serious biker mags in the early 80's covering this very subject and the problems . Time and hands on since has proven them correct to me . Even S&S rods running the 3 hole pins have a terrible track record of pin failure due to cratering .
