It's hard to explain but Road King
2001 carb Road king TC88. Little back ground. Earlier this summer the liner inside the tank peeled off. Rust and little particles made there way into the carb. I cleaned carb (twice) and got tank relined. New fuel lines and sent petcock off to pingel to rebuild. Bike runs awesome for various amounts of time. 5 miles strong, then no power. Rubs hot and smells weird. Shut off for 10 20 mins and it will run strong for another given mileage. Changed tps sensor no change.

Clogged air vent? As gas runs out the bottom of the tank, air has to flow in the top to take up the space. If it can't, the gas stops flowing. After sitting awhile, enough air leaks in here and there so you can run again, for awhile. THere may be a vent line under the console, there may be a vent in the cap.

I would check for DTC codes as well as take a look at your battery cables and main circuit breaker as you described a "Weird Smell" which may indicate an electrical issue?

Appreciate your replies. This has been a pain for a few months now. I try to explain and it's hard to place into words. I did change the breathers out. Put them together backwards and ended blowing my dipstick across the boulevard. I fixed that, did not replace, but made right. Do y'all think something could have happened internally because of the pressure build up? When I read about sumping, they describe it the same. Riding along fine, then like a big hand is just slowing the scoot down. Could I of damages the oil pump somehow? I'm reaching now, I know... cam chest was up graded 15,000 miles ago to SE innards 204 cams.

I would say the motor is sumping... Set your oil level warm and ride, When power lost, check oil level. Bet it's down. Some like to pull the crankcase plug and measure the oil in the crankcase. I prefer not to as it's not really needed and the plug is meant to be permanent . While many M8 owners thing that sumping is new, it's not. TCs do it too.. Depending on your mileage, you may need tensioners. If you recently replaced them, you likely didn't align the oil pump correctly or didn't replace the crankcase O ring.
