Had my '95 Road King in the shop for some minor issues and had them upgrade to a Stage 1 Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner kit. Now, after about 30/35 miles when the bike gets hot, it starts to spit and sputter and wants to die if you don't keep the RPMs up. Coincidentally, it happened not long after filling up with 93 octane gas... I usually run 89 in my EVO. It's in the shop now, but they can't seem to find anything wrong... any suggestions? Before I took it in, it ran like a top, so I think it has to do with the air cleaner kit, but they can't find anything wrong.
As you suspect, could be bad tank of gas...also could be fuel tank not venting properly...sounds doubtful to be the new aircleaner unless they changed something with the venting...Did your fuel tank vent go to the carb? If it has now been plugged it might cause a vaccuum in the tank after running awhile, preventing the fuel from flowing to the carb...just a guess anyway.
More than a few times, and not always with a bike, I've gotten bad fuel and always when buying premium. Problem is with todays prices, most people buy regular so when you buy premium, it may have been laying around in the ground for who knows how long. If traveling out in the country, or fueling at a smaller store, best to buy regular. At least you have a better chance of getting fresh fuel. And NEVER fuel if you see a tanker sitting there with hose in the ground (dumping fuel) If you have to, wait at least 3 minutes after it's finished.
Other than what's already been mentioned in the previous post, outside chance the coil is going bad or the timing sensor in the nose cone is going out. (They become heat sensitive) But I would drain the fuel tank and carb bowl to eliminate that possibility before going any further...
Put about a quarter can of dry gas and a little octane booster in it and if that clears it up then the gas was your problem. If not did they re-jet or do anything to the carb because they put the S/E air cleaner on?? Let me know how you make out. If you want call me at 518 469-8426 and we can go over this in more detail.
