To recap: I put my 2010 RK in a wooden storage shed before departing 3 years ago. I changed the oil, ran it out of gas, put it on a jack stand and left it uncovered. I return to a very dusty bike. I checked for critters, did the T-CLOCS, put air in the tires, changed the battery, put in a couple of gallons of premium gas and...
It started. Not immediately, but it started. I let it idle for a good 10 minutes and was very pleased. The next week I get it registered and insured. Now Im ready to go, right? So I thought.
I get it out of the shed and let it idle while I get my helmet and gloves on. I put it in gear and it died. It still turns over but wont start. I took the air cleaner off and sprayed some starter fluid in the intake. It turns over and fires until the fluid is gone but wont stay running.
I know the easy answer to getting it to run is to take it to a shop. Before I do that, Id like to receive constructive suggestions on what I can do to get my bike running again. Is this problem related to being stored? Any ideas to get it running?
Storing it dry of fuel is the worst thing you can do after running Ethanal gas. More than likely, fuel pump and all lines in tank, fuel tank if bladder is rusted out, and up to injectors.
when you hit the run switch with the ign on, can you hear the whine of the fuel pump? If not, then fuel pump fuse or the pump itself might be frozen/dead
I would guess that running it out of gas (vs filling it to the top with non ethanol gas and a shot of Sta-bil, may have dried out the rubber in the fuel pump. Fuel pumps (after market,) shouldn't be too expensive.
