Default Modifying a fork brace

I recently had a pair of chrome sliders installed on the front forks and they are about .020" larger in diameter then the clear coated sliders that came on the bike. The SuperBrace I had on the bike obviously will not fit the new sliders, so I am going to have it machined to fit.

A machinist at work is going to open the bores (for want of a better term) on one of the CNC machines we use at work. I have drilled and tapped a pair of 5/16-18 holes in the bottom of the brace and bolted it to a 1" thick piece of steel so it can be mounted in the machine. Question I have is, the brace bores have to be slightly smaller than the diameter of the sliders so it can clamp to them. Any opinions as to how much smaller, .002 or.003"? FWIW, SuperBrace does say their fork braces are held to tolerances of .002".

I would say .002 smaller Max. .001 would be better.

I wouldn't bore undersize.. Add spacers between the caps and brace then bore to size. Assembly will be easier.

Finally was able to have a machinist at work modify the fork brace this morning. While I can do very elementary things on a lathe and a Bridgeport, these CNC machines amaze me on what they can do.

Machining, we were shooting for .002" under, ended up being .0025" under.

Back on the bike, and fit perfectly.
