Change Lifters Before Or After Cam Swap

now that is laughable to say the least.
tooooooooo many crackpots, the ole saying: "everyone has a sphincter nerve"
FSM is your friend
unless you want to learn how to work on a motorcycle with a claw hammer, yep, seen that one on, you guessed it, "youtube"

YouTube is too valuable of a resource to just dismiss it a laughable. Is there some crackpots out there publishing garbage? Of course there is, but there's also a ton of good information, you just have to use your due diligence to sort the wheat from the chaff. The exact same argument could be made about this very forum or most anywhere else on the internet yet here we are all learning and exchanging the very same technical information in question.
This is how I do it, But I have never opened it up just a for a cam change. Always done bearings too. So it was pulled apart. The manual has the section on using a holder. Not sure the point. Just pull them and get them out of the way. But I have also never done it that way. Friend who is indie, and goes fast as he can to make money, doesn't use holders either.
here's the problem mr. kk
at least on the forum you will draw many comments, especially so if there is a miss statement.
hummmmmmm
youtube not so much. case in point, i was just surfing and run across a well known shop (or he says so) working on an ironhead. it so happens to be about cam timing and such. now he is showing how to correct timing mark and breather mark alignment. i will say this, even new from the factory, some marks are NOT spot on, matter of fact, my 1974 xlch had multiple marks. so now he is going to pull the pinion off so he takes a claw hammer and starts yanking on the gear, hummmm, against the aluminum case no less. the he beats it back on, hummmmm, two things wrong!!!
1. that gear is an interference fit and needs a tool to properly remove and install. BTW: there is also a set depth which he does not address.
2. if that gear is that loose then there are worst issues to fix first.
what is the point????
well here it is!!!
he left comments turned on so i ask a couple of questions, hummmmm, proudly beats on his chest how great he is and the turns off comments.
hummmmm, try and turn off comments here. i gladly welcome them, good or bad.
remember, you must be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, not think about how to do it, cannot go wrong with the factory, so the FSM is your true friend.

I have the service manual but but it only shows removing to inspect or replace lifters but not in conjunction with a cam swap.

remember the statement: "walk and chew gum at the same time" ????
never said there was no value, just crackpots
perhaps this job needs to go to the shop, since he does not understand the concept. many people here gave good intel.
most people want to take short cuts, then they can blame someone else.
the dude with the claw hammer is one!!!! and who pays????
a loose pinion will walk the shaft when the forces of power on/off are exerted. all camming will do it, reason why mfg's will limit the travel or you can get radius ride and the cam will wear out.
before hd tightened up their machining, they even used shimming.
i find the youtube a comical entertainment, watched a dude use a three wheeler to dig a trench and it nearly killed him a few times and, YET, he still went on!!!!
sometimes it should be "YOUSTUPID" than youtube.
each his own, industrial mechanic 47 years and my philosophy is if in doubt go to the book. now IF i say worked only on detroit, then MAYBE i will trust my memory, but working on aprilia to zundap, not so much, more so if it belongs say to you.
you make a funny!!!!!!
what do you think big brother is doing??? protecting the STUPID!!!!!
reason why in the 1960's you could mow your yard with a 1.5hp mower that weighed a few pounds, but now 5hp at the low end and massive amounts of protection and additional weight. after all, if you cannot walk and chew gum at the same time, then perhaps you need to drag the mower across your foot, learn a lesson then, hummmmmm, perhaps NOT!!!

youtube on my brother, youtube on. someone will visit you in the hospital, that is IF you make it there.
