Default Lost Key

Hi All, New here first post, second Harley
I just bought a 94 soft tail, the previous owner had lost the ignition key. Good news is it's unlocked. Bad news is I can only take my bike places I can keep an eye on it. So my question is.....what's the best route to take in resolving this problem? Take ignition out and have lock smith make a new key, buy new ignition switch or parts of the lock mechanisian separately (if available)? Can I upgrade and retro fit newer key fob style? Is there a aftermarket switch available? Oh and looking to buy a service manual. Should I just stick with genuine Harley one or are there any good aftermarket ones?
Thanks, Pete

A dealer can order you a key based on your VIN number. I think they are 2 for $25.

That may not be possible with older bikes. If not, the simplest is to replace the lock, when you will get two keys to match. It's also a bit like changing the door locks after moving home! You may have to try the after-market to get one. As for a service manual, buy the factory one for your model and year. The others are very general and miss a lot of detail.

I've had a bunch of Softails & RoadKings, and have NEVER locked the ignition switch on any of them. If they want it, it's going into a van. Your '94 has the best lock available;liked the old padlock system much better than the current forklocks. Just padlock it & forget it even has a key.
