Wire....alright to use this for a while?

I stopped by the noise testing the LEOs are putting on today. My home-made baffles I made over the winter made my bike louder... so I'm going to try to fit some SmartPartz baffles. There were only two other bikes there. If you're interested, it's at the Nait Parking lot on Gateway Blvd. until 4 today.

I didn't go, but they are there again next Saturday for those that do.

The guy here at work that got ticketed last summer was in Court Thursday morning and managed to get his ticket thrown out. It appears that the cops are no longer required to follow the SAE J2825 standard; they only have to follow the EPS guidelines (Which seem to change as needed). Where he won it was from questioning the cops that did the testing, he had asked both of them if they conducted the test according to SAE J2825 and the EPS guidelines and both cops said yes. In the end the Judge said that because the cops identified that they were following both SAE J2825 for parts of the test and the EPS guidelines for other parts that he was unable to uphold the ticket. We'll have to wait and see if it gets appealed tho.

I think it's June 30th when the City's appeal goes to court. They're still trying to raise funds for a good lawyer. I know that a lot of the shops in the city are collecting donations.

That case should decide if they need to follow the J2825 standards or not. If the city loses, all tickets up to date should be thrown out.

I installed the SmartPartz baffles in time to get retested. They dropped the readings by 10 db at idle and 12 at 2000 RPM putting me well under the limit.

Went out for a ride yesterday and was cut off half a dozen times, turned in front of twice, and some wanker tried to change into my lane on the Henday while I was even with his front bumper. And they claim Loud pipes don't make a difference...

The J2825 defense is a crapshoot right now. It really depends on the Judge more than anything. Still, the majority of the cases are being thrown out if they make it to court.

My favorite part about the second time I went to get tested was the LEO (oldest guy there with the big dorky hat) came over to inform me that they were giving me a break not ticketing me for my helmet (Bell 500 metalflake), because it was too old to be Dot approved. After informing him it's a new helmet and explained how Bell re-released the 500 in limited numbers, he said "Maybe the Sticker is new, but I like your story."

That would likely be Theuser, from what I've heard he goes out of his way to be a dick to anyone on a Harley by threatening to impound and crush your bike.

The 2000 rpm test doesn't matter anymore either, it must be under 96 db at any rpm over idle and per the EPS guidelines it can't be over 100 db at 5000 rpm for motorcycles with 3 or 4 cylinders

Theuser was there. He did the test on my bike the second time. He was the LEO on the stand on my case, and let me know he'd be looking for me after he lsot. Didn't seem to recognize me though.

The other guy was quite a bit taller, had a mountie style hat and those funny motorcycle pants. He wasn't testing bikes... seemed like he was just there to tell people about all the things there were getting away with. Heard from a buddy that was given grief about his lack of reflectors from the same guy.

So Ribs , How are they doing the test up there in Edmonchuck? Here in Calgreeee there going to be setting up cameras, make too much noise going by and click. It's just warnings for this season.

They use the J2825 measurement standard. They measure a set distance (20 inches I think) from the exhaust at idle and at 2000 RPM. 92db limit at idle, and 96 at 2000 RPM.

I heard about Calgary using the Noise Snare. At least it's going after all vehicles, not just Motorcycles. Edmonton could have used that technology, but decided on using the Motorcycle only method.

It sucks that they're cracking down. My bike was never that loud, but now it's as quiet as a freaking moped. It's just not the same experience riding a quiet bike.

Thanks Ribby. So will they only be doing it in the city's? I guess I'll just have to ride real easy like and lug the motor till I hit the city limits or push the bike.
Edmonton is going to lose because they are only picking on bikes, it's a rights issue and discriminatory towards the bikes.
Money grab is all it is.
