Bob:

Thanks

Will give the process a "shot" this weekend.

If we have to take the bike to the dealer, what would we expect to pay for this "learing"?

Thanks

Tom

If your dealer is stand-up, they wont charge you a dime.....

But on the off chance that they are hard up for the labor rate, it won't be more that 1/4 hour labor...

Any more than that, you are getting the shaft.....

SHB: Just curious, but how will NC know what a/f, ignition timing, etc. is in the replacement ECM, especially if it from a used bike?

The calibration is part of the ECM's memory file, along with the VIN.....

All you have to do is get the ECM Calibration from the System ID screen (Digital Tech), or in the SERT Data Mode, you can pull up the CalID....

The ECM is restricted to calibrations through the Digital Tech due to VIN constraints, the SERT will allow any cal to be installed, but certain maps will not work with certain ECM's....

I'm really trying to understand this thread, but am not completely clear. I understand what I need to do when replacing a TSSM as this procedure is in my Electrical Diagnostic Manual and is the procedure described above, the PASSWORD LEARN procedure. But my manual does not directly address replacing the ECM or associated installation procedure requirements.

If I follow the posts here I think that either using a new replacement ECM, or to re-use a previously used ECM, you would have to take bike with replacement ECM to HD dealer to have bikes VIN burned using the DT, and then also do PASSWORD LEARN procedure either at the same time using the DT (makes the most sense, obviously)? Or, if you really wanted to do the PASSWORD LEARN procedure the hard way, you could use the procedure outlined previously?

I’m hoping one of the knowledgeable techs who have made contributions to this thread will clear it up for me.

BUT, no matter what, any bike that is equipped with aJ1850 Serial BUS (Connects ECM, TS/SM, Speedo/Tach), whenever ANY of these components are replaced with non-married units, they MUST BE MARRIED.......)

SH BOB, understand completely NOW, that when replacing components on the serial bus that they must be MARRIED using the PASSWORD LEARN procedure.

Can you address my question in the 2nd paragraph of my Post as clearly? “When using a new replacement ECM, or to re-use a previously used ECM, would you have to take the bike with replacement ECM to an HD dealer to have bikes VIN, and possibly a base or Stage X operating parameters program, burned into the ECM using the DT”. This in addition to the Password Learn procedure.

SH Bob, thanks in advance. I think my appreciation for your inputs to the Forum are appreciated by many here!

(Yes, you would, as that is the ONLY way to have a VIN encoded ECM, with a restricted program [Stock/StageI Legal]... For someone who really doesn't care, you would use a SERT to just install a specific flash, but would have to do a PASSWORD LEARN manually...Hope this muddies it up a bit more) This in addition to the Password Learn procedure.

No, this does not "muddy" things up.In fact, I now know enough to be dangerous Thanks a bunch SH!

Last question, although I will not promise it to be my last. Can I create 2 identically programmed ECM's, and 2 TSSM's also identically set up to work with either ECM?

--Another wards, can I make 2 ECM's and 2 TSSM's which would be completely interchangeable without having to do anything upon install?

Thanks again Bob
