Strnge speedo issues
Hi! Have a small problem that just popped up. The speedometer quit working properly. The needle jumps up to about 20 and the odometer does work. The trip meter however works perfectly. I'd love too keep this 81 with 8500 miles on it original if possible so I don't want to buy an aftermarket or replica piece. Does anyone repair these? Perhaps a used one as long as I can get into it and "fix" the mileage.

Have you checked the cable? Many speedo problems are cable problebs.
Unscrew it first from the speedometer, hold it out straight toward the back of the bike, and unscrew it from the drive unit in the front wheel. You can use a good [cheap ones usually do not fit] 5/16" wrench to loosen it at the drive unit. Note that you must rotate the entire cable as the fitting is fixed on the end. Note also that you have to carefully determine at that end is the cable and what is the drive unit and what is the cable end or you will be turning the incorrect part.
Once it is out remove the cable from the sheath; note which end of each part is the top. Thoroughly clean both parts [i use spray can wd-40 in the sheath]. Lightly grease the inner cable, re-install.
Hope it works.
I'll report back later with the name of the guy who does repairs. It is expensive but he has an excellent reputation.
