idle issue
75 XLH stock bendix carb. Non adjustable jetting. Electronic ignition.
having a little problem with my idle. I don't think this is the usual check the intake clamps thing either.
When the bike is hot and I pull the clutch in to make a stop, it will idle a little high, about 1,200 rpm, then drop down to 1,000 (normal) within 20 seconds or so. That seems fairly reasonable. However; after a couple of minutes at 1,000 rpm, the idle starts going down to 750 and the bike acts like it is going to die.
I hosed down the intake with a garden hose and the idle didn't change so I don't think there is an intake leak there. I also checked the float bowl level and I "think" I've got it right. The idle seems rich enough but I'm not sure.
any other ideas?

Well, it really does sound like an intake leak.
I do not think that the garden hose is a good test. You need a fine particle spray. The best is propane as the particles are extremely fine - a pure gas. WD-40 is the best second choice but, in either case you do have to spray a lot, and the WD-40 will leave some mess whereas the propane is very clean.
Just do not light it up, eh

I think I got this figured out. I took the carb off and the gasket inbetween the carb and the intake was partially blocking that little hole that leads up to the idle jets. I figure it didn't pull enough air through there to get the fuel into the intake at idle.
The gasket didn't fit very well. I'm pretty sure it's a Taiwan replacement. Anyway, I put a couple drops of glue down on it to hold it in the correct position, buttoned it all up and now it doesn't die down at idle anymore.
