I just got a top end done on my 76 XLH, I put it back together and fired it up. When it starts, it idles fast intitially for about10 seconds and then it gets faster and faster for about 5-10 seconds and then the engine dies. Does anyone know what is causing this and how I can fix it?
Sounds like it's not getting enough gas to keep running. A mixture leaning out will usually idle higher before the motor dies. Could be a stuck needle valve in the carb, or maybe the intake manifold is leaking badly. Hard to diagnose over the internet.
Since you say you have put the top end back together that indicates you have had to re-install the carb and manifold. Are you sure the manifold is not leaking air?
Start it up and have the start up idle speed reduced to normal.
Spray the intake manifold with water after starting.
Does it idle smoother when sprayed? If so, then you have an air leak.
I would dp this check first to make sure the manifold does not leak air.......pg
I'm starting to feel like I got myself in over my head. Ireseated the manifold o-ring and the seal is good. Now when I start the bike, it backfires and idles fast. I can'tfigure out how to get the idle speed down, I 've been turning the idle adjustment screw and the throttle stop screw and I can't get a smooth, slow idle. There is also smoke coming from the exhaust, not like when it was burning oil, but it comesout by the head too. And then I tried to take it around the block while it was idling fast, but it dies right away. Any ideas?
