Default Inner cam bearing tool

Has anybody found a cheaper cam bearing installation tool than Jim's? It doesn't look like George's Garage has one yet. I may be in the market for such a tool in the next year or so when the warranty is close to done. I may try to make a new plate using a cam cover gasket as a template and re-use the bolt and bearing adapter from my twin-cam tool. The trick would be to line up the hole just right.

I thought I'd bring this thread back up.
More and more of us are installing cams in these new M8's.
What are you using to change out the stock cam bearing?

I haven't changed cams in my m8 yet but I believe the one I got from Gerry Betty would work fine

Why won't this work? And then use the old cam to drive the bearing into place? Haven't opened up an M8 yet so I am curious.

Amazon Amazon

This works fine to remove. A simple installer that centers on the rollers are all that's needed (and a little bit of common sense). I made one from some aluminum bar stock and a simple lathe operation.

Uh, that's pounding. I prefer pressing. Case damage would be very, very, very bad. If you're taking a hammer anywhere near the inside of the engine, you're doing it wrong. Nope.

That's a good idea. I didn't personally try using the old cam but cannot think of a reason why it would not unless the shoulder isn't contacting the outer cage properly. The interference fit is not that great so if a case were to break with this little effort you have bigger problems.

I've gotten all my special tools from Georges Garage in the past, I'm sure he's working on the new M8 tooling. I'll give him a call and get back to you guys.

"If you're taking a hammer anywhere near the inside of the engine, you're doing it wrong"

I agree 100%, and will wait for the proper tool.......

I got my twin cam inner bearing installation tool from Georges Garage. While I have no problem using a slide hammer removal tool, no way in hell am I pounding a new bearing in with an old cam and hammer. If all else fails, I'll make something out of flat steel.

I emailed George's Garage the other day about this. They hope to have a tool available in November.
