Default Install your own Stage IV

Curious if anyone on the forum has installed their own stage IV kit on a M8? It doesn't look too complicated. I've done similar work on cars over the years.

What are your thoughts?

I put one on my 17 street glide last year with an aftermarket cam and d@d pipe.Put about 10000 trouble free kms on it. Recently pulled it apart so I could install 120 Pistons and cylinders plus a different cam.Everything looked fine when I pulled it apart.Only pain in the butt is messing with the oil lines but it's a pretty straight forward install.good luck..

I'm going to do my own 117 or 120 kit next off season. Id do it now but not ready to give up my warranty.

It requires some special tools, but it’s not rocket science. If you have done engine overhaul type work before, you can do it. Should you do it is the question you need to answer. If you do it, forget your warranty. That said, if you do decide to do it, take the pistons and cylinders out of the kit and have an incredibly competent machine shop measure everything, preferable in tourque plates. If the parts don’t measure proper, take them back!

Keep in in mind that if you do that minimal step, there could still be problems. Look around on this site and you will learn about those potential issues and the lack of a clear solution. My personal opinion, having lived this, is wait a while and see if these issues can be resolved on a consistent basis. I personally don’t believe said remedy is anywhere near at hand.

Probably not not what you wanted to hear, I don’t like it either, but you asked and I almost feel like it’s my moral responsibility to at least share. My personal opinion is that Harley Davidson doesn’t have any compunction about screwing people over and I think folks should be warned about their issues. Take care!

More then half of the piston/cylinder sets we've checked had improper clearance. Not by much, but just enough. I wonder if Harley builds both the piston and cylinders in house or if they are built somewhere else?
