Default MC Insurance Shopping

Yeah, shopping for motorcycle insurance. I called Geico and they want $529 for a full year of full coverage on my 2009 FXDL. That's not too bad but it's for the $25000/$50000 bodily injury liability and uninsured motorists, with a $500 Ded for comp and collision. Do you guys think this is the best deal I can get? Who should I call for a quote?

The only way to know if it's the best deal is to call around. There are too many variables in determining the premium including your age, sex, county you live in and FICO score. Each company weighs those factors differently. There's Geico, Allstate, State Farm, Progressive and others.

Try Markel American Insurance. I'm at 50,000/100,000, 500 deductible, on my 2010 Street Glide for $391 this year.

Another one to try would be Dairyland insurance and Riders Insurance.

As has been said, there are sooooo many different factors that will have a bearing on how much insurance is gonna cost you. But if you're into making comparisons, here's me:

Bodily injury 250,000/500,000
Property damage 100,000
Pedestrian No-Fault 10,000
250 deductible comprehensive
1,000 deductible collision

I also have both uninsured and underinsured but nothing is charged on my bike insurance premium because my State Farm agent said that coverage is for ME, the individual, and not any particular vehicle, and they are already charging me for UN and UNDER coverages on my Tahoe and don't need to charge me again on my bike.

After not having a bike for many, many years I bought a Harley in 2009, called my State Farm agent for insurance. As soon as I saw the SF premium I checked around and changed to Geico at half what SF was charging back then. From Geico went to Dairyland. Now back to SF as their bike insurance did become competitive. But...., it pays to shop around every so often. And, I am 71, retired, good credit, no accidents or tickets for a long time. My last SF premium for 6 months was due in November and it was $148.71. That would be $297 for a year; however, my bike premiums for my 2016 RGU have gone down a few bucks at each renewal for the last several renewals so when I get the premium bill for May it will probably be less than the $148 it was in November.

Hope this info helps you.

Doing an on-line quote with them now. 25000/50000 500 deductible for me is $382. The same thing Geico was offering me, but for $147 less. Have you ever had to deal with this company? Are they OK? Thank you for the tip, Bonnie

Are you doing your quote with Dairyland or with Riders? The reason I ask is that my experience with Dairyland was that their bike rates were the best, but I couldn't afford to have Dairyland insure our cars--they only sell "high risk" coverage for cars which means high premiums and low coverages.

Actually did it with Markel American Insurance, the same 1 that Bonnie uses. Instead of having the insurance start today on 3/20, I changed the date to 3/21 ..... Midnight. That's 5 hours from now and the rate droped to $368. I bought it, it's a done deal.

Not sure if Progressive is in your state. Here in VA, simple is an online fill in the blank what you want and a quote is there. Be sure to do a few. I know the first I did at the minimum was the same as some of the increases coverages. I do 300,000 where you quote 50,000 . State Farm here uses them for their bike insurance.

One thing I do not like about them is they will not give the best rate even if your credit score is excellent if you do not finance a car in the last 10 years. I have an 818 out of 850. Always wondered why it usually hung around 818 when everything looked good. Found out by asking Progressive just why I did not get the best rate just a few weeks ago. (Only affects my policy by $16 dollars) My policy said they had checked Equifax but when I looked at Equifax, they had no inquiry. Progressive explained I was losing more than 30 points since I had no record of ever paying off a car loan. Did not matter they I bought all my vehicles outright. They say the hit they make is unrecorded since they ask Equifax 10 questions. My score was 820 out of 850. Perfect except for no recorded history of paying off a car note.

Obvious that their lobbyist in VA had fixed it for them to get a few more dollars from someone who did not need to borrow for a car.

My coverage is only $206 for a year on my old 04. full coverage. perfect driving record. Just renewed it.
