Pikes Peak Hwy-Paved or Gravel?
Coming from Portland, OR to Sturgis the week before rally. Meeting up with 3 East Coast buddies. Two will be on sport bikes. Leaving Sturgis plan is to drop south into Colorado to NM and head East with them.
At least One wants to ride to top of Pikes Peak. I've always heard the road up is gravel, course I'm 59 now so by now maybe it's paved.
Any of you CO folks able to tell me.
Also it will be while Sturgis is happening so hoping it won't be too crowded, or is it always crowded?
Going to be chilly, even though first week of August?
Thanks for any help/info.

The road is PAVED all the way to the TOP NOW!!!
- Maybe others have known the road had been paved all the way to the top of Pikes Peak but it was news to me a few days ago.
- I had been up to the top in a vehicle as well as taking the COG Railway but have wanted to ride my motorcycle up there for years.
- All portions of the road are currently in very nice condition and in fact paved to the top.
- The gate staff were friendly and my trip up and back with a short stay at the top was very enjoyable.
- I would recommend this "motorcycle ride" to anyone and everyone!!”

If you hit it middle of the week it won't be crowded, just busy. It is a toll road, so be prepared. You'll be ok in the middle of August, but be prepared for weather ranging from summer to winter temps with the possibility of snow even. And what you hear about altitude sickness is true, be aware of how you're feeling on the way up. A guy on a Harley had a heart attack on the way up last year.

Definitely paved, and, being a toll road, it's well maintained. You won't find any potholes, and it's always kept in shape for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (check out youtube on that if you want to see some really crazy people). Plan on a couple hours up, couple down. Make sure you've got fuel and rain gear.
Have fun and enjoy the view.
