Default Primary oil question

Just changed the starter on a 1997 electra glide. Removed the primary cover, put it back, flowed the torque sequence. Now dripping oil from bottom of derby cover. Replaced gasket. Question is, If the primary is over filled, will it drip put of the derby cover? Any help is greatly appreciated.

A leak at the derby cover is not an indicator of an overfilled primary, it means the seal between the outer cover and the derby cover is not good, be it a bad gasket, damaged or warped outer or derby cover, or improperly torqued screws.

Just kind of odd that I never touched the derby cover. It started leaking after adding oil back into the primary. I'm going to get a new cover, hopefully it solves the problem.

How did you add and set the fluid to the proper level without removing the derby cover??

Ok, I`ll ask a stupid question...

Why didn`t you remove the derby cover and service the primary the correct way?

I removed the primary cover to change the starter. No need to remove the derby cover.

The derby cover is the cover that is removed to adjust the clutch, and to service the primary with oil.

No other cover is considered the right cover to remove to install lubricant.

Try opening up an owners manual or service manual, and you will see how to properly service the primary.

You are guessing what the lube level is in your primary...

Why not just do it the correct way?

I opened the chain guide cover to refill the fluid. I don't think there is any reason to be chastise about how I filled the primary. I thought this forum was to help.
